Afrika helpt

In Afrika helpt, Sunny Bergman and Ama van Dantzig confrontationally explore the idea that Africa, as “the needy continent,” is dependent on “our Western kindness”. Could you also turn the perspective around? Isn't Africa actually surrendering her wealth and well-being, for the benefit of Europe?

In Afrika helpt, we see how resource-poor and consumption-driven Europe depends on the African continent. That while we have always been taught that Africa is a needy continent, surviving only by the grace of our donations. This misrepresentation turns out to be a painful blind spot. This triptych reveals a disturbing reality from a new perspective: what if Europe does not really help Africa, but vice versa, what if Africa actually helps Europe? Academic research shows that for every euro Africa receives from the West, 30 euros flows back.1 Africa bears a heavy burden on Europe and other Western parts of the world2 by supplying cheap raw materials, bearing the consequences of the climate crisis and acting as a bin of Western dumping. So who actually depends on whom?
